The Romanée Conti from the 1945 vintage: the most expensive bottle of history

The new record of the most expensive wine of the world !

On the Saturday,October 13th 2018 during a sale organized by the Sotheby’s House at New York City the record of the most expensive wine was beaten. In fact, the Romanée Conti from the 1945 vintage was sold 558 000 dollars. Nobody had bought a bottle as expensive yet.

The bottle was sold 17 times more than the Sotheby’s high estimate which was 32 000 dollars.

We can think that it’s a crazy sum but as wine lover know it’s not any bottle and it’s never too expensive.

The Romanée-Conti with the stained label is part of the only 600 bottles from the 1945 vintage. This vintage is really particular because it was the last one before the domain tear off the vines to replant it after.

The Romanée Conti is also one of the greatest Burgundy wines and a prestigious and famous Cru.

Located on a little parcel of less than 2 hectares, The Romanée Conti produces nowadays only between 5 000 and 6 000 bottles a year.

Few minutes after, during the same sale, an other bottle of Romanée Conti from the 1945 vintage was sold 496 000 dollars. It became the second highest price never register for a wine bottle.

The last record: 

The record for a standard bottle of wine was about 233 000 dollars for a Château Lafite Rothschild from 1869 sold during the Hong Kong Sale of 2010. This day, 3 bottles of the same vintage was sold for the same price.

Concerning all sizes, the record dating from 2007 for a Jéroboam (3 liters) of Mouton Rothschild from 1945 sold at New York for 310 700 dollars.
