Is 2016 a good vintage?

The year was turbulent in France and winemakers from several regions entered the 2016 harvest having already suffered from hail, frost and rot. But this did not prevent the French winemakers from making a great vintage thanks to a nice return of the sun in summer and the expertise of the producers. It was a surprising year for Burgundy. It experienced its worst frost since 1981. The hailstorms led producers to declare «disaster states» in Chablis and Beaujolais, and yet the vintage is very varied. The overall rating in red Burgundy is 17/20 and in white 15/20, which is not to be set aside. Producers in Loire and Champagne also suffered frost at the beginning of the season. The Languedoc winegrowers thought they had survived relatively well until the Pic-St-Loup wineries north of Montpellier were hit by hail the size of a golf ball. Bordeaux crossed the vintage almost unscathed, but the drought at the end of August let many producers to pray for the rain. It’s really a two-half year for Bordeaux, as Decanter’s editor Jane Anson said in a first report on the 2016 Bordeaux harvest.

The Rhône is also varied. We can find exceptional wines on Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côte-Rôtie.
