The last of the three estates founded on the former vineyard of Léoville – the other two are Léoville-Barton and Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville-Poyferré owes its name to Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré de Cère, who creates it following his marriage to the daughter of the Marquis de Las Cases, in 1840.

Produced from an extremely famous terroir, the wine of Château Léoville-Poyferré was not long in being noticed, so that the new estate was classified Second Grand Cru in 1855. Unfortunately, the end of the 19th century is not very lenient with wine producers, who have to cope with the successive epidemics of powdery mildew, phylloxera and mildew. This period marks a quantitative and qualitative decline in the production of Château Léoville-Poyferré . In 1920, the Cuveliers, with more than a century of experience in the wine trade, took possession of Château Léoville-Poyferré through the civil society of the Saint-Julien estates.
You will find in this first wine of the castle Léoville Poyferré of finesse, balance, an elegant complexity, a beautiful woodland, a velvety texture as well as a very good ability to guard. If 2009 is very well rated and deserves all the praise, the following years are also worthy of interest. Especially the 2010, ample, mellow and spicy.

Since the end of the 70s and the arrival of Didier Cuvelier, this second classified growth has been completely renovated. Many parcels have been replanted and the wine making tool updated. The vine now displays a respectable age and the vintage is in the race for excellence, within a well-endowed appellation in challengers. The wines have a sap and a scale that now places them at the top of the appellation. The terroir gives the wine of Poyferré its depth of dress, its ample and nervous flesh, its broad spicy bouquet, as well as its longevity potential.
